Student Athletics Fee

Postby b_dog » Fri Feb 05, 2016 9:24 am

Story in the morning rag this morning about it. The UofA and Washington are the only two schools in the Pac-12 who don't have it, and the fee will enable students to go to sporting events for free. Needed to supplement private funding for the long-overdue renovations in Arizona Stadium. True to form, The People's Daily Star interviewed a female graduate student who doesn't care about sports. Kind of like the gal in SoCal who tried to start up a tie-died "bring back the 60s" publicity stunt/hobby to protest our Haka dance. (Re-worked version soon to come, Michael Eletise.) Shockingly, she opposes the fee, which would only affect new students, but not current ones. Like her. ASu's got it and we need it. Like college basketball refs, the ABOR needs to rule the same way at both ends of the court.

NOTE: A completely separate argument is the Arizona Constitutional requirement that the legislature nearly fully fund the state's educational institutions, which they haven't done. The reality is that we're where we are. So, if that's your issue, work to vote out the current legislative members who vote against appropriate funding for higher education resulting in higher student costs, but don't expect the UofA to continue trying to compete with one arm tied behind its back.

Considering that I paid $175 (If I remember correctly) for Every Other Sport+Basketball+Wildcat Club for my son last semester...seems reasonable to me!

I realize I don't have to pay it, but...

It's the cost of 1 or 2 textbooks. I would assert that if the University is really concerned about student costs, they actively try to lower textbook costs.

Nobody likes taxes or fees. But everybody like to reap the benefits from taxes and fees. I am surprised that Stanford has athletic fees. They are richer than most anyone.

Re: Student Athletics Fee vs. Tickets

Postby catballer5 » Fri Feb 05, 2016 7:31 pm

Since Arizona Athletics is separate from the main campus, they don't have a student fee. Instead, they have the Zona Zoo pass which is optional and grants tickets to the games. Most schools charge a student athletic fee and say with this fee you get into games. Is the proposed fee strictly for funding of facilities and there is a still a Zona Zoo purchase option?

Many schools charge the fee to just undergraduate students and it is optional for graduate students.

My understanding is that it's only for undergraduates, that the fee would be levied for the facilities issues, and that would also be the sole method for undergraduates to gain admittance to the athletic events. I look at what I pay for football and basketball tickets, and it still seems like one hell of a bargain. I understand that those who want to spend four years exclusively with their noses in textbooks will inevitably complain. But, it's healthier to participate in the university community and be more well-rounded, and you're getting great value for it. I assume even the current heavily-discounted student tickets for football and basketball run a student at least $100. But, to the extent students prefer to boycott the major athletic events, it's just another relatively modest fee from a school that's still a bargain compared to its peer institutions.

Anyway, that's my position, and I'm sticking to it. :)

The current rec center on campus is as nice as any fitness club you can find just anywhere. I see a fairly steady stream in of student types and out every time I drive by. Nice to be able to maintain that for everyone's use, whether you use it or not.
