A few practice notes from yesterday

Discussion on Rich Rodriguez and the Arizona Football team

There was a good practice yesterday. As always it can be a three ring circus, lots of things going on everywhere at the same time.

In no particular order here are a few things
1. It appears the starting defensive front for now is : Bruno, Parker Zellers, Gilbert in front, Scooby in the middle lb, Turituri and DeAndre Miller. Sir Thomas Jackson getting is getting lots of reps. What I found interesting is the second team nose was Marcus Griffin 302 red shirt freshman.

2. Cam Denson looks to be bigger and just as quick. he is listed at 168, but he looks a bit bigger to me. reggie Ware is second team lb right now. i did see some of Jamarie Cobb also. Right now, Ware looks more advanced than cobb.

3. I saw a number of tight end/ hback plays. I think we shall see more of this next season. Kern is starting right now, Trevor Wood could start next fall perhaps. Wood had a nice touchdown run where he caught a short pass and did a Gronk imitation of running over and carrying people into the endzone. Cloy is a freshman to watch also.

4. Quarterbacks are Anu, Randall and a bunch of others. No change there. Anu looked sharp and Randall has some wheels that turn real fast.

5. There is a new 15 second drill or end of game drill that helps the quarterbacks deal with stopping the clock or getting the play off rapidly. Lots of loud noise and yelling designed to give the qb a look at all the confusion. Probably something from the Fiesta Bowl.

5. Baker ran well. He is so short you can't see him behind the big line and that is the whole idea.

6. We still have the receivers, Jones, Grant, Philips, Johnson, Griffey, Richards all had their moments. There is a lot of talent in the group.

All in all lots to see. New number out there mixed with some of the old.

Bearing Down on the spring game will be soon

I approve of how you're spending your retirement.

Great updates, and much appreciated.

How did Zellers look size-wise?

Let me tack on a few more question.

I was intrigued by the South African kid's size and athleticism (DeBeers). Is he still on the team, and if so what position?

ESPN Pac12 Blog earlier this week went down a list of potential "high impact" JC's, and 2 Cats made the list -- Fotu (DL) and Magliore (Safety). Any word on those two guys, or our mammoth OL transfer from Cal?

Is Dawkins making any kind of impression at QB?

Zellers is starting right now. He looks a little bigger, but he is not the size of most nose guards anywhere. He is listed at 247 but I could believe 255 or so. I was talking to his dad at an earlier practice. His did says that Parker is trying to get up to around 260- 265. He is not there yet, so he is a work in progress. The coaches love his aggressive play and his attention to technique. His dad said in high school, Parker played against Jordan Poland once. He said the size differential was comical.

Thanks. I still wonder at his play on the goal line stand against ASu. He owned the center and then made a one-handed tackle in the backfield on 4th down. Love the kid. Hoping there will be more of him to love this fall.

Ask and you shall be answered.

deBeer is in the offensive line. He is big and athletic but still learning the technique. He will play at some time. I met is mother and sister at a past practice. It was their first trip to the US. They had never seen an American football game or practice live. They did not know if they would get back for a game or not. Very nice people. They are not the diamond deBeer family rather they live on a game farm out in the bush.

Fotu is in the mix getting reps. He has a fine head of flowing black hair which makes him easy to spot. He can play and is learning the defense. Magliore I have not seen to my knowledge. He is in there but I have been watching the line play.

Tagaloa is a keeper. He is big, mobile and smart. He starts at left tackle, Cayman is next to him. He wears number 72. I think we will be pleased with his play this season.

Dawkins is on of the white shirts qbs. There are only 2 red shirts(do not hit), Anu and Randall. There are 3 or 4 white shirts. I would say Dawkins is the pick of the white shirts at this point in time.

Good to see Luca Bruno getting some reps with the regulars, let alone the first unit. He was a decently rated recruit out of HS who was in line to play as a true frosh and then ran into some eligibility issues. I thought last year he'd at least crack the rotation but did not see any meaningful action (to my knowledge). That leads me to believe he might have been banged up a bit last year.

Also, any insights on Sharif Williams? RR said they were planning on getting him ready to play this fall. We all love Zellers.... but you can't teach 316 lbs of mass at NG.

I believe Williams is wearing a green jersey which means he cn participate in non contact drills I think. Second team was Marcus Griffin at 302. Worthy is hurt and spends his time walking or running around the practice field with a yellow jersey.

Cam Denson is bigger and more committed to CB (although you can tell he still has an itch to play receiver)... Story here:
